Encouraging young interest in Campden

CCHS is getting young people interested in our local history!

The learning pack that we developed as part of the Campden House project was distributed to local primary schools, with an offer of a prize for the best piece of ‘persuasive writing’ about Sir Baptist Hicks …. Were his ‘good works’ in the town prompted by a genuine care and interest or was he keen to promote himself, seeking elevation from the merchant class?

St Catharine’s Catholic Primary School in Campden took up the challenge – the years 4 & 5 walked around the town with Vin Kelly, CCHS Secretary and Cotswold Warden, looking at the buildings and the site of old Campden House. Then they considered their arguments. The winning writing was by Oscar Briggs, Year 4 and the runners-up were Charlie Proud, Amelia Aquino, Bertie Evans (Year 5)

Samantha Smedley, the class teacher, said “Hopefully we can do something again in the future. It’s been a really lovely unit to do with the children and they’ve loved finding out about the town.”

CCHS is also sponsoring a local history essay prize for Year 12 students at Chipping Campden School Academy. The award, named in memory of Jill Wilson, Vice-President of CCHS, will be judged in the autumn and the winning entry will be published on the website.
