Some old ‘coins’ have been donated to the History Society.
Strictly speaking they are not coins, but trade tokens, minted in the 17C by local businesses and inns. Tradesmen’s tokens were widely used in place of lawful coinage which, in smaller denominations, was in short supply. They were an illegal but tolerated system of money, privately issued by merchants particularly during the period 1648-1679.
CCHS will be doing more research into the merchants who issued these tokens to try to add to our story about Campden life at this time.
