Save your house deeds!

House deeds may no longer be needed as proof of ownership but it is vitally important to look after them if you want to study the history of your house or the land on which it is built. Some law firms have thrown out old documents to save space – make sure that yours are safe. We would be very interested in looking at any building documents for Campden and surrounding villages. Information on old houses comes flooding in

The House History Exhibition has encouraged more people to bring in their house deeds, including one boxful that had been rescued from the floods. Sadly the writing on the oldest document was lost but enough information was saved to be able to reconstruct the history of the cottage.

The Exhibition was a great success with over 200 people turning up to see what stories our Group had uncovered and to add their own memories and facts. The Mayor, Chris Jones, looked at the displays with Donald Holdsworth, CADHAS Chairman, and was interested to hear the story of Campden Workhouse and the long history of The Gables in the High Street which had wealthier occupants! The Silk Mill and Twine Cottages are projects that need more information, and the historical development of Sheep Street is still being researched, so we hope to hear from more people living there.

The House History Group were particularly pleased to see Dr. Nat Alcock who came to the Exhibition to see how well his students had done. Dr Alcock is nationally renowned for his books on title deeds and the architecture of old houses and was a tutor at the Group’s Day School in March on ‘Understanding Old Deeds’.
