Who do the English think they are?

Derek Taylor, historian and former international TV reporter

As you’d expect from a race 1600 years in the making, the English are a complex lot.  They value democracy, but took centuries to give everyone the vote. They’ve been tolerant, yet at times persecuted minorities. They’ve been eccentric and funny, but also conformist and straight-laced. They revere the rule of law, but put a military dictator’s statue outside parliament.  Bewildered? Derek will sort it out, and tell us who exactly the English are.

Mary Gray, CCHS, and Caroline Stanford, Head of Engagement, the Landmark Trust

  • It would be helpful to have the venue for the talks included. I tried to attend the 17th January talk but could not find the location (previously advertised as Town Hall)

  • My apologies for this oversight, Patrick, as Administrator for the website and responsible for sending out the email reminder, I was not aware that the venue had changed because the Town Hall was being re-decorated. I am told that we are back to ‘normal’ now and the February talk will be back in the Town Hall. I’m afraid that you were not the only one to be disappointed about missing the January talk – apparently the room was packed and a number of people could not get in. Thank you for getting in touch.
